Shiroi Koibito: Sapporo's Famous Cookie, Its Scandal, and Its Lawsuit

October 18, 2026 (Today)

Shiroi Koibito is the Hokkaido meibutsu that fills overhead bins on every flight out of New Chitose. A thin butter cookie sandwiching white chocolate doesn't sound dramatic, but this one has a name taken from a ski trip, a scandal that shut it down, and a lawsuit against Japan's biggest comedy company.

A Simple Cookie With a Messy Record

The cookie itself is a langue de chat sandwich with white chocolate inside. It's light, crisp, and very sweet. Made by Sapporo confectioner Ishiya since 1976, it's mostly sold within Hokkaido, which is exactly why everyone brings it home.

A Theme Park Built Around a Biscuit

Shiroi Koibito Park sits at the end of the Tozai subway line in Miyanosawa, a quiet residential part of western Sapporo. The building looks like a European fantasy castle dropped into a suburb, with a clock tower that puts on a little show on the hour.

Inside, you can see part of the production line and do a cookie-making workshop. It's family-friendly and photogenic. It's also very much a branded attraction, not a gritty factory tour.

Snow, Falsified Dates, and a Comedy Parody

The name comes from a founder's line after skiing, when he said white "lovers" were falling from the sky, meaning snow. Shiroi Koibito-tachi was also the Japanese title of the documentary about the 1968 Grenoble Winter Olympics.

In 2007, Ishiya admitted to falsifying expiration dates on returned stock. Sales were halted for months and the president resigned. The brand recovered, which says a lot about how attached people are to it.

Then in 2011, Ishiya sued Yoshimoto Kogyo's group over a parody souvenir called Omoshiroi Koibito ("Funny Lovers") sold in Osaka. They settled in 2013, with the parody changing its packaging and limiting where it was sold.

Hokkaido Butter and Dairy Pride

Shiroi Koibito rides on Hokkaido's dairy reputation. The island is Japan's dairy heartland, and Sapporo's sweets scene, including Rokkatei's raisin butter sandwiches and Royce chocolate, is built on it. Locals respect Shiroi Koibito but often have their own favorite souvenir, and it's not always this one.

Grenoble, Comedy, and a Soccer Field

The strongest pop culture links are the Grenoble documentary title and the Omoshiroi Koibito parody, which itself became a cult souvenir in Kansai. Ishiya also has ties to local soccer: the field next to the park is the Miyanosawa Shiroi Koibito soccer ground, used by Hokkaido Consadole Sapporo.

Around Miyanosawa

  • The rose garden: The park's outdoor garden is free to walk around and is genuinely pretty in summer.
  • The soccer ground: Right beside the park. You can sometimes catch Consadole training sessions from outside.
  • Seasonal illuminations: In winter, the park lights up, and with snow on the ground it's one of the more charming suburban sights in Sapporo.

"You Can Only Buy It at the Airport"

You can buy Shiroi Koibito all over Hokkaido: Sapporo department stores, station shops, souvenir stores. The airport just has the biggest piles. Outside Hokkaido it's limited, though some Hokkaido antenna shops and online channels carry it. No need to panic-buy at New Chitose.

Three Moves for Sapporo

  1. Take the Tozai Line to Miyanosawa. The park is about a 7-minute walk from the station.
  2. Book the workshop ahead. Weekend and holiday cookie workshops fill up.
  3. Buy in the city, not the airport. Prices are similar, and lines at New Chitose before evening flights can be brutal.
